"While this game features many options, items and playing modes. It is lacking at the same time. New items, styles and difficulties unlock over time but it's all really a one trick pony. The only replay value lies in how long you're able to find fun in creating new looks and different outfits. It's endless fun for one player, a quick bore for the other. Last of all, it's a really great way to distract kids."
New Style Boutique is, of course, a dress-up game. It was released for the 3DS. It starts with you as an assisant stylist. While working up the chain you’ll earn the right to call this boutique your own. You’ll be able to sell clothing, help customers and participate in contests. You can also dress up your own character or style your own assisants. Go easy on them, please!
The game features many different kinds of clothing, all of which can be mixed and matched. General styles like girly, chic and feminine grown-up. Or even some ‘obscure’ styles like cosplay, lolita and goth lolita. Clothing items even change during the seasons. Play long enough and you’ll also unlock some male fashion items. Male “options” in this game aren’t expanded upon much, though.
Let’s first talk about your, probably first ever, very own boutique! This boutique is ready to be redecorated to your liking. Dress up the mannequins in your window for a nice touch. Then finish off by designing the outside. Give it a name and you’re now officially done with your boutique.
Inside your boutique you’ll be able to dress up your own assisants for practice. Help the customers inside your store with their various requests and finish the transaction. With your earned money you can buy new clothing items. Use these on your own character, in contests or sell them in your store.
New Style Boutique also features a contest-mode. This is where you pit your styling skills against your opponent’s. You’ll be tasked with dressing a model in a certain style and here you have to create a full outfit, top to bottom. After you’ve dressed your model in the most b-e-a-utiful outfit of all time, it’s catwalk time! It’s now up to the judges to decide which stylist best envisioned the tasked style. Depending on your earned rank, you’ll of course receive prizes! This is where you unlock new pieces of clothing, brands and styles. And money. Yes, always need more money.
Contests come in 4 difficulties. Beginner, Premier, Elite and International. Each new difficulty requires you to rank 1st place 10 times.
If any of your friends own this game, you can exchange stylist cards. This is done through the 3DS’ StreetPass function. After exchanging cards with your friends, you’ll be able to shop in their boutique, view their saved outfits and rate them.
Multiplayer is where you’ll be able to face off against your friends. Find out who has the superior fashion sense in a contest. Up to 4 players can participate in this mode. Earn money, rare clothing items and anything your friends used for their model. This is an easy way to completing your wardrobe.
My view on this game is that while fun, it’s also shortlived. The overall downfall of this game is that it features many options, items and playing modes. It is lacking at the same time. All items etc. get unlocked over time but it’s all really a one trick pony. The only replay value lies in how long you’re able to find fun in creating new looks and different outfits. It’s endless fun for one player, a quick bore for the other.
