Darksiders Warmastered Edition is a graphical upgrade to the original and for the great price of twenty bucks it won't break the bank. The game has a great story and challenge and is well worth the price.

Darksiders is developed by Vigil Games and published by THQ Nordic. The game was initially released on January 5, 2010. The remastered version of the game was released on November 22, 2016. The game is a hack and slash action role playing game. You take control of War, who is one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. You go to earth as you think that the final battle between heaven and hell has started. But you quickly learn that the final seal has yet to be broken and the other horsemen haven’t arrived yet. War is defeated by the demon Straga and but is saved by the Charred Council where he is accused of starting the apocalypse, siding with hell, and the downfall of Mankind.  He’s able to talk the council into giving him the chance to find the real reason why heaven and hell are battling on earth. The council agrees but takes away his power, which you will have to regain through the story.

The world is divided into separate locations in which War will have to regain certain abilities in order to gain access to these areas. The Scalding Gallow is the main area of the game, which is where War will get his missions from Samael who requires you to get the hearts of the four chosen who guard the black tower. Each area will grant you a new ability that is required to navigate through that area. You will have to complete side objectives, battle the demons of hell and the angels of heaven, complete puzzles and explore in order to find your way to the chosen.

The combat is very basic as it’s mostly smashing of the buttons but when fighting certain enemies it’s best to use a combination of blocking, dodging, and attacking. War has the ability to finish enemies off once their health has dropped sufficiently. Each enemy has a different way of getting killed in a violent way. You are able to buy different combos at the shop which can be useful down the stretch. War’s main weapon is his two-handed sword called Chaos Eater. He is able to gain different kinds of weapons such as a scythe, a pistol, and a cross-blade. War also has the ability to use magic powers which is known as wrath power. There are four wrath powers that you will be able to use. Chaos form is the best ability that War has which transforms him into a large beast that can deal heavy damage.

The graphics have been enhanced from the original making it look sleeker. The lighting looks to have been darkened which brings out more detail in the environment and enemies. The frame rate is one of the most noticeable changes. As it’s at a nice 60 fps and 1080p, Darksiders feels better than ever before. This is the only thing that has been enhanced, as all the sounds and voices have remained the same. Also, nothing new has been added to the game.

The campaign is a decent length for this title. Depending on the difficulty you play on it will take between 8 – 14 hours to complete. You could probably get through the game faster if you just focused on the story instead of trying to get all the upgrades for War. You will be able to upgrade War’s health and power by collecting life stone fragments or wrath core, which will permanently upgrade War when you collect four of them. I would recommend trying to upgrade as much as you can before progressing to new areas because of the new challenging enemies that you will encounter. You will be able to buy these at Virgil’s shop when you have collected enough souls. The puzzles that you will have to complete to be able to get to the chosen can be challenging. You will have to back-track a lot, and you will have to even complete sub-puzzleses in order to complete the main puzzle that you are working on.

Darksiders is a great game that was a hidden gem on the last generation and it was nice being able to play this game on the current generation. The game looks better than it has before and the story is a nice stray away from the norm. The price for this game is twenty bucks. For this you get the same game with a graphics upgrade but nothing new. This is great for gamers like me who want to revisit the game but especially for gamers that want to give this game a try. Hopefully, more people will become interested in this series so they can finish the quadrilogy. Originally they wanted to make a game for each horseman but only got one more installment in – where you play as Death – before the company declared bankruptcy.
