Designing Lawbreakers

During GDC 2016, Dan Nanni of Boss Key productions gave a presentation on Lawbreakers and provided some insight in the development process of the game and their design philosophies. Named ‘Following the Fun: Designing for Lawbreakers’, the lecture focused heavily on the core aspects that drove the development team during their designing process – putting fun before fnnction.

A Masterclass in Storytelling

Games are arguably first and foremost about gameplay, as without it there can be no game. That’s more or less a fact. But videogames have grown into something much more than a simple set of rules that form a ‘game’. Games have become a medium with which a story can be conveyed, and as the medium matures, storytelling in games is explored to greater extent. There’s many ways in which a game can tell a story, and some of these go beyond what may be conceived at first glance (things like environmental storytelling, which is a prominent thing in videogames). However, an obvious step when creating a story for a game would be to borrow from other media that have been doing it for much, much longer. The logical step would be to look in the direction of movies.

Developing in the age of Streaming

Most gamers have probably watched a few at some point: gaming livestreams. Many may even have their personal favorite streamers or content-producers on Youtube or Twitch. It’s a great way to be part of the greater gaming community or to share your own gaming experiences in a meaningful (and entertaining) way. It’s for gamers by gamers, and it’s growing bigger and bigger.
