Games are arguably first and foremost about gameplay, as without it there can be no game. That’s more or less a fact. But videogames have grown into something much more than a simple set of rules that form a ‘game’. Games have become a medium with which a story can be conveyed, and as the medium matures, storytelling in games is explored to greater extent. There’s many ways in which a game can tell a story, and some of these go beyond what may be conceived at first glance (things like environmental storytelling, which is a prominent thing in videogames). However, an obvious step when creating a story for a game would be to borrow from other media that have been doing it for much, much longer. The logical step would be to look in the direction of movies.
