I can't think of anything good to replace gimp with though. As far as i know gimp is your best free solution.

sadly, both the gimp and blender are really crappy to use, and are nothing like the industry standard tools. with regards to the gimp, it depends on what you want to do, but there are really not a lot of good free image editors out there. could try paint.net though!

as for 3D, unless you want to render stuff, try and find a download of Gmax. it's 3Dsmax without the rendering ability and it's totally free

some people can use those. Especially blender isn't that bad. It comes with many plugins at default.

I wouldn't call adobe's apps top notch though. They bought apps from small developers and rebuilt them so they could sell them as adobe apps. Resulting in terrible standardization. I'd love to switch to something better than adobe.

Still

free > everything else. If it's free, you can't complain.
If you want to make a mod for a game, you can for free with blender.

in adobe's case, i was referring to Photoshop, and that's definetely something they created themselves. in the 3D case, i'm talking maya (not 3dsmax cause thats another one thats way different from the rest, although it IS very popular), most 3D modeling apps look, act, and behave similar to maya.
