Slage: Ankama’s New Hack ‘n Slash Preview

About a week before Ankama Convention #5, Ankama announced they are developing a hack ‘n slash game called Slage. On the convention itself we got our first look at the game: It will be an online multiplayer game for the PC, Ankama’s first ever game in full 3D! The style is the usual colorful cartoony style we know Ankama is good at, with a touch of Diablo.
The game can be played in teams of max four players. As you control one of twelve classes (the familiar Dofus classes), you can fight your way through randomly generated dungeons. Special savepoints, called Phoenix rooms, are in place to regroup and change spells if you need to. Bosses are well-known monsters from Dofus as well, we got to see a pretty neat looking moowolf. This moowolf was promised to be one of the smallest bosses, so I think we can expect a few quite epic fights. Read more
NiSuTe Europe Goes To Paris; AnkamaCon #5!

For a lot of Dofus fans, Paris is not the first place to go for a convention, But five NiSuTe members took the task upon them and went to France. After a 5 hour trip, we got our press passes, climbed the big stairs and arrived at the convention. The hall was actually pretty big, and there was a lot to see, it wouldn’t be to interesting for a non-Ankama fan though, Concidering Ankama being one company, and very popular among the French youth. And if there is one company that can make kids go crazy, it’s Ankama.
After getting inside, a giant zaap and a giant monster welcome you. Imagine yourself being a little kid, playing Dofus for a while and seeing this enormous replica… You’ll go nuts! The hall was convenient, wide and every aspect of Ankama was presented in a great way; From older things, like Wakfu and Dofus-Arena to new things. Full reviews will be posted later! Read more
Gamescom: Ankama part 2

Well, Ankama gave us the oppurtunity to answer some of the dofus-community questions. Have fun reading!!!
1) Ankama is now putting a lot of effort into “class balancing”, which raises a lot of concern from players whose builds get heavily modified. Why is 1vs1 PvP the main source for the balancing? Ankama has long emphesized team play (dungeons, prospecting locks, etc), so shouldn’t the usefullness of classes in all sorts of fights, such as group PvM and team PvP, be considered? Read more
Gamescom: Ankama part 1

As far as I’m being told, at the E3 in 2004, Ankama had an extremely small stand in the very back of the expo. Located in France the company had 50 employees and were working on an MMORPG called Dofus. NiSuTe felt some kind of connection with the company and in the next five years we remained close contact. I am a Dofus player myself. Dofus keeps growing and growing and growing. But seeing this enormous stand of 200 square meters went beyond my wildest dreams. The company has almost 450 employees now and keeps getting bigger and bigger. Read more
Dofus: inter-server tournament that will whip up the crowds!
August 3, 2009 by Maikel De Bakker

DOFUS’ first inter-server tournament throws open its doors and allows players from different DOFUS communities to face off against each other.
AN INTER-SERVER TOURNAMENT
The World of Twelve’s first inter-server tournament allows the best characters of all servers and all classes to face off against each other in epic combat. After a tough selection process based on two challenges (one of speed, the other of character), no less than 353 characters are about to challenge each other, much to the delight of the on-looking crowds! At the moment they are getting together into groups of 3 characters and will battle other teams during four weeks of exciting combat. At the end of these 4 weeks, the 64 best teams will face each other once more, until there is only one left. The winning team will then collect their laurel wreaths and several rewards, for themselves and for their server.
EVERYONE FIGHTING ALONGSIDE EACH OTHER FOR VICTORY
During the tournament, community challenges (in the form of riddles to solve, or groups of monsters to decimate, for example) will be organised in order to allow all players, whatever their level, to win points for their server. Each one will be able to show their team spirit by supporting their champions and fighting for their server to win the day!
MAKING EVENTS MORE EXCITING AND DYNAMIC
As a tournament, Goultarminator unites players for the same cause, but it also corresponds to the DOFUS team’s desire to make events more exciting and dynamic.
Sylfaen, DOFUS Community manager, explains: “Goultarminator is the start of a new, exciting way of doing things for DOFUS’ Community manager team. The objective is simple: to strengthen the links within communities through competition. The event will allow the team to test new tools which will help us make this kind of event a regular thing.”
A TOURNAMENT ORGANISED BY THE TERRIBLE GOULTARD THE BARBARIAN
Following the appearance of a mysterious Zaap (teleportation gate) in the Treechnid Forest, terrible things have hit the World of Twelve, arousing anger in the local flora and fauna … but also spreading panic amongst the inhabitants of Amakna. The mystery was solved with the arrival of a letter from Goultard the Barbarian announcing a tournament allowing characters from each class and each server to face off against each other in teams in a unique event…
So let it be known! Goultarminator is just the beginning of a series of tournaments, each promising to be more amazing than the last!
Schedule
Monday 3 August: Start of the tournament.
Saturday 29 August: Final.

Find out more about Goultarminator here.
The rules of the tournament are available here.
Note: a video of the tournament’s best moments will be put online on the official website.

NiSuTe Report : Ankama Convention 3

Ankama held its 3rd convention at Lille on the 20th-20st December.
20,000 fans were expecting: this goal was achieved on the first day only!
I said “fans”, cos a convention is for fans and only fans. I mean, don’t expect anything for the others: if you’re not a fan, you will get bored in a few minutes. But for fans, it’s something not to miss!
The convention was held at the “Grand Palais”, in the London Hall (~15 000 m2).
Why going there? There was everything you needed to know and see about Ankama:
*Conferences with Ankama game creators
*Showcasing of Wakfu, Dofus 2.0, Dofus Pocket and Dofus-Arena Pocket
*The Dofus-Arena League Final
*“Café Salé” Exposition, with drawings especially created for this convention
*All of the Ankama comics (including Dofus Tome 10)
*The Ankama shop: the place to buy all sorts of goodies and comics from Ankama, and many things sold out on Sunday!
*Dedication sessions
*There was also a Wrestling show, but on Saturday evening only (too bad we missed it!)
It was on a Sunday morning, around 10:00 AM. I was a little late (the Convention started at 10:00 but my train arrived only at that time, and it wasn’t very closed to the “Grand Palais”).
I needed to find Maus and Maikel too (who kindly came along for a great day!).
At the entrance, Florence Di Ruocco (in charge of Ankama Communication, see the photo) kindly welcomed us and gave us the passes for the Convention. No access to the show without them, and the security staff was very strict on every detail!
When entering the Hall, a big Dofus monster (holding a Dofus
) stood just in front of us, so no mistake: it is the right place for fans! There was an inflatable castle on the right, cos the Convention also introduced Vampyro (a Vampire from Dofus and Wakfu)

*Inside, you could see the Wakfu animated series (but since we weren’t there for that, we didn’t waste time for that).
We first go and see Dofus 2.0: something like +100 PCs were available for visitors to play the upcoming Dofus 2.0 with updated graphics (in a Wakfu style). In about 15 minutes, you could make your own impression on this new version. Many people were always complaining about the new character design, but bugs were fixed and the game ran perfectly. Dofus 2.0 is set for a Summer release, so don’t be too much impatient!
Wakfu TCG (the card game
) was tested there, so we moved to check it out
.
This convention was the occasion to play the game and see what rules are good/bad, have to be changed or removed… It was like a sort of beta test, and even if this game is to be released this year, they still have to work hard on it.
We interviewed someone from the Wakfu TCG team and we learned this card game has no relationship with the previous one (if you remember, we spoke about a card game from Dofus long ago), that it targets children but is still too much complex for them and that a video game (to play the card game online) will be launched along with the card game. The team in charge of it is composed of fans of card games but they didn’t try to copy existing games. Despite it is hard to bring fresh ideas, they try their best and we wish us good luck. Cards look great and the game seems promising.
We also met Alix Lepinay (in charge of Ankama communication for books and comics only).
He told us Ankama was trying to translate all of their books and comics for an international release this year! Keep fingers crossed cos it will be a very hard and long work! (for instance, the Dofus comic is filled with French word plays that won’t be easy to translate).
There’s already one publication in both French and English: Diary of Inhuman Species but what really impressed us was Mutafukaz 0: a comic created by Run, printed like a old book and drawned in the style
of the old US comics! Pretty cool! It also includes 3D-glasses: it really rocks!
Enguy : Succès Story of Ankama & Dofus

By: Enguerrand Aubertin

Ankama was at this year Japan Expo. Since we first meet them (only Thomas Bahon and Emmanuel Darras) at last year E3, the Ankama grew very quickly. They were first a small studio developing small (but quite good) PC games. And so came Dofus.
From video game to animation
Dofus is a 2D tactical RPG in Flash. Eveyrbody thought it would be a flop, since nobody ever created a major hit in flash! But they all underestimated the power of Ankama. Their teams are really good at everything: very skilled game designers, graphists, very good story boarders and so on. Dofus isn’t impressive at all graphically or technically speaking. But it’s very well done, with a great story mixing heroic fantasy, comic and manga, with references to many famous video games, mangas and comics (Mario, Splinter Cell, Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, Dragon Ball, Hunter X Hunter, SquareSponge Bob…). But on top of everything, what makes Dofus so different is its universe, is this charming “French Touch” Ankama masters! That’s why fans are so crazy about Dofus!
Last year E3 (note: the last E3 as a huge gaming show!) is very far behind. Now Ankama can come and get a real booth. They are not hidden in a corner anymore, and they really deserve it!
Ankama booth was the 2nd largest one at the Japan Expo (only Nintendo had a bigger one, but not that much bigger). You could play games, buy derivatives products (such as badges, Dofus the Manga Tome 6 in avant-premiere, Dofus Artbook 3, Pandala, Mutafukaz…), get your purchases dedicated by a dozen of skilled and cool drawers (poor Kuri I annoyed once again!!!
but I like the others too!). 50 persons from Ankama were here only to please fans, included a dozen of drawers only for all the dedication sessions! Wakfu was at the show too, but it will be another article! There were also several Ankama events during the show.
Ankama booth included the Ankama Shop, Ankama Edition and the latest one: Ankama Animations.
Well, under the pressure of fans who always want new games and derivative products, Ankama showcased its new product: “Goultard the barbarian”*. Goultard is a (new?) character of the Dofus manga, sometimes powerful sometimes quite weak, sometimes nice or very evil! A very good character for this! But what happened to him? What made him become so strange? There are some hints in the 6th tome of the Dofus manga, but Ankama had the very good idea to create a ~15 minute movie!
Here’s an extract:
This movie is really incredible with amazing graphics. I also saw Blue Dragon (the anime) at the Japan Expo and trust me, even if Blue Dragon is beautiful, Goultard is even better! And Ankama didn’t unveil the final product: it can improve! If it’s a hit, there will be several episode broadcasted on a famous French Channel! (TF1 or France 3? I really don’t know but we will soon see 26’ episodes!). Even if you read the tome 6, you’d better see this movie, it’s a must-seen!
Here are some pics for you, who couldn’t be at this event:
The pressure of fans!
We can’t deny Ankama is doing its best to please fans. And fans are always behind Ankama!
During this event, hundreds of fans came only to see what’s new and to buy new products (just have a look at the photos to see how crowded it was!). The pressure is high, but it turned Ankama into a big studio, and Ankama can get bigger! It just depends on fans! Will they support Goultard? Will they play Wakfu? Will they read all the books? What we can actually say is it works, but will it last? Fan base is growing fast both in France and in the rest of the world. But Ankama grew very quickly so it’s always hard for a company to become so successful within 1 year only! Let’s hope all their upcoming games, books and movies will be hits, they really deserve it!
Ankama has several good surprises for everyone, and trust me it’s really great so I can only advise you to try their games and read their books, you’ll find something for you! Ankama creations can fit everyone, so don’t miss them! And they are all so fresh. I think that’s the key element of their success, but that’s just my opinion.
And I’d like to thank Thomas, Emmanuel, Kuri, Lichen, Alix and Ray!!!
For further information, please check Ankama, or come and see the other articles related to Ankama on NiSuTe
*Translation of the original French title “Goultard le barbare”.

’Hey, what’s this weird banner doing here?’ You might think. ‘Haven’t I seen it before?’ Yes, you have, me and Maikel wrote the previous interview with the Ankama studios developers and we’re the ones doing it this time around as well.
We once more set off on Maikel’s motor bike leaving the office of NiSuTe Europe in Tilburg, crossing the Belgium border on our way to the next. And yet again, we lost our way in Belgium -why can’t they put the signs at the right place- so after a small detour we arrived at the French border. Our travel from there on was without any problems and we finally arrived at Ankama Studios.
This time the interview was mainly hosted by 3 of Ankama’s Employees: Thomas Bahon, Cédric Gerard and Michael Thant. After a quick tour through their new office we all settled down to do what we came for, interviewing. Every now and then during the interview more employees of Ankama would join us to answer our department specific questions. The questioned departments were: Development, Artist/Animation and Music. The full interview took us 6 hours so get ready, this is going to be a long read.
Well Ankama has moved. Previously they were cramped up in 4 tiny offices trying to do their work in a building they had to share with some other small companies. Nowadays they have a nice new location totally for themselves. This location is situated in an old textile factory. The offices are located at the first half of the 1st floor and the employees are already working there in full glory at their new location. Even some desk decoration is popping up here and there. The rest of the old factory is still being renovated. But if Ankama keeps growing at the pace they currently are, that space will soon be needed for expansion. Currently, Ankama has 80 employees working for them and if everything goes as it should, they will reach 90 by the end of this month. And to give you a small idea of how fast they’re actually growing, when we did the last interview, their employee total was 40.
Between this interview and the previous one, a lot has changed for Ankama; as told in our previous article they’re still working on projects for other companies and the demand is rising steadily. Unfortunately Ankama is not allowed to tell us for who they are working. Next to all this, they also started housing an animation section. This animation section is working for their current new project: Wakfu. But they are also trying to create a TV animation series about the Dofus/Wakfu Universe.
Ever since Ankama started creating games they were passionate about gaming and that might be why the games at Ankama have this special feeling about them. “We’re talking about the special feeling gamers get with both gaming classics and innovative new games.” At Ankama they believe that the selection and hiring of passionate new personel for their games contributes to this development – and so do we. We hope that Ankama won’t do what we have seen happen in so many other development teams and lose their passion to satisfy the majority of the players – but from the looks of it, they couldn’t be further away from that possible future.
Ankama is also working to increase it’s relations with other countries. They admit their current advertising was directed almost exclusively at France. This is about to change. In a short period of time big advertising projects will start in the UK, under the supervision of Michel. If those are a success they are planning to advertise in Germany, Spain, Netherlands and maybe even the US. They aren’t planning to do all of these advertising campaigns at the same time, allowing their servers to keep up with the growth of the user base. And if the advertising is successful enough, every country that had advertising will get its own separate server. Specific servers will be progressively put in place for the various countries, regardless of any advertising campaign.
Anyway this was the information about Ankama studios’ current status and their near future; now it’s time to reveal to you some stuff about their games.
Let’s start with Dofus… Ah bummer, I reached my word limit for today’s article… Maybe I will write about that information next time. *evil smirk*
Back to Ankama part 2
Ok, ok, OK! I will, I will! It seems that a lot of you Ankama (read Dofus) fans actually hoped my previous article would reveal some inside info about Ankama’s games. Well, you’re finally getting what you’re waiting for – the “good” stuff. (As if my previous article wasn’t good enough, so ungrateful….)
Let’s start with Dofus.
For our readers that don’t know the game let me give you a short introduction to Dofus.
In short, Dofus is a Flash-based, tactical MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game) which has its unique artwork and humor, giving the game its own special feeling to play. You start with one of the 12 classes and explore its colorful world. In this world you can gain levels by killing monsters or doing quests. When you have gained certain levels you learn new spells/powers so you can fight bigger and stronger monsters. You can also learn jobs to gather resources and/or process resources into helpful items like gear, potions and the like.
Dofus keeps expanding still. Totally new updates pop up, giving access to new areas, dungeons or monsters. One of those future updates is the new Low Level Mountain. This Mountain will be the new spawning area for newly created characters of pay to play accounts (free to play accounts are restricted to Astrub still, thus will spawn at their class statue there). On this mountain the freshly born characters can go through various quests and dungeons to learn the basics of this game, making it a lot easier for totally new players to understand how this game works. This Mountain will also be the first area with level restrictions. No one above level 20 will be able to access it so the “newborns” can first build up their strength before they’re left alone in the vicious game world. The new area has, like the many “new” areas, an upgrade in its looks. And for the first time they are using real backgrounds. If you take a good look at our pictures you can actually see Astrub as if you’re looking at it from a real mountain. This new area is perfectly timed with Ankama’s current Advertising plans so the new wave of foreign players can start this game without being scared away by the complexity the game used to have for beginning players.
There is also another new island on the drawing board. This island alone will contain at least 10 new dungeons divided over 3 layers (underground, ground level and treetop/sky level). Ankama also revealed a secret new ability that most likely will available on this island. The new ability is still in development so we can’t tell you more about it.
From various forums we gathered player-made questions about Ankama. We took the opportunity during the visit to ask as many as we could.
Dofus Q&A
Question: Will other classes get their unique spell (class special spell) like the Iop and Ecaflip have?
Answer Bill: Yes, they will. At the moment we’re still thinking of what abilities those other classes will gain. We want them to be truly unique and one of their kind. So they will enhance battle tactics and not just make the class more powerful. But eventually they will come – it’s just a matter of time.
Question: Will there be more international servers?
Answer Bill: Maybe. But to start a new server Ankama has to be 100% sure the new server will have a big enough player base to start with. Dofus economy cannot work on a few accounts alone it needs a decent player base to start working.
Question: Will Dofus get better music?
Answer Guillaume: For the time being no. Flash has almost no music support forcing us to add music in the game as mp3 files. For example, if the game would have better music you need file sizes of at least 1,5MB per music file. Currently there is only 5 MB available for the entire music package. Thus at the moment the Music artist compressed all his Dofus artistic composition into a package of 5MB. And trust me I don’t like it one bit to hear my artistic compositions being compressed to the tunes they are right now. But improvement is on its way for the other games Ankama is working on.
Question: When will this endless class nerfing end?
Answer Bill: There are still discussions going on about abilities that are too powerful and abilities that need some boosts. The main intention we have is this: the higher your level is, the more tactics, by usage of spells, you’ll need. Currently though the character with the biggest sword wins. So be prepared to see an upcoming nerf of all melee weapons as well.
Question: Will there be more events in Dofus run by a game master?
Answer Michael: We are working on it. Every server will get its personal community manager that will be in charge of those events.
Question: Will Dofus vanish when Wakfu is released?
Answer Bill: That’s fully up to you. As long as Dofus has a large enough player base, the game will continue to exist and will receive regular updates which will add new material to play with.
Question: What will be the bonus of getting a character up to level 200?
Answer Bill: It’s currently unknown/undecided but it’s worked on with great haste. That’s because on Rushu there is almost a character that has reached that point. One thing we are sure about is that it will be a new move that will enhance tactics and not just make the character more powerful than he already is.
HMMMMMz word count is nearing 900 while I’m only allowed to make articles of about 600 words. (This is done so it’s kept easy to read for everyone). Oh well, this time it isn’t my fault you won’t be getting more information for the time being. You guys just asked too many questions about Dofus alone. I guess I have to tell you about Dofus Arena and Wakfu in our next article about the interview.
Back to Ankama part 3
Well let me first apologize to all the fans out there waiting anxiously for our 3rd and last article. Life caught up with me and I had some unexpected obligations that kept me from finishing this article. Again, my apologies, I’m only Osamodan, so unless it’s summoning I can’t do magic.
Anyway, let’s not waste to many words on my apologies, because I will end up needing a 4th. I might be cruel sometimes but I’m not THAT cruel. Tempting? Yes, but it also means making yet another article in my current situation so I’d rather not.
As many of you know, Ankama has another game running: Dofus Arena. This battle mainly uses the battle concept of Dofus and but developed into an entirely revamped game. Ankama did and is still doing a lot of work on that game. In a near future it will get a major update. The battle system is revised, how exactly is still under debate so we can’t tell you about it, yet. The engine in use is upgraded. Up until now Dofus Arena only used Flash to run the game. Now Ankama Studios is working on a new engine that is still based on Flash, But has Java rendered animations. Allowing the game to have a background animation like running waterfalls. And of course these new animations are used for the spells too, so your eyes will be treated with nice works of art whenever you cast a spell. (Sorry fans there are no devices yet which can playback seen memories, if so I would have gladly shown you what we saw) Anyway from what we saw this game has gained major improvements and this game will also be a test for the new engine because Wakfu will be using a similar engine.
‘Finally’, you might think. Think again, I am their sorry to tell you but we didn’t get to see a lot of their new project Wakfu. Of course we asked them some player questions about it, but they didn’t reveal very much. Do understand that this game is far from finished and a lot of concepts are still in discussion. Even if Ankama showed us what they had, chances would have been that they would be changed/removed from the game before I even managed to write this article. Of course I can tell you the already known facts like moving maps, etc. But I think most of this article’s readers already did. What we can tell you are a few answers which we and some players asked about concerning the game. I hope those will please you enough for this long awaited article *hides in shame*.
Question: Is there a beta of this game? If so when? and will it be French only?
Answer: Yes there will be a closed beta expected in July. Everyone can try to sign up for the newsletter. As soon as it’s announced, from the signed up players a few fortunate will be chosen to play the beta. This beta will mainly test the current battle system of this game. There will be no difference in language spoken meaning English, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, etc etc can participate in this beta. Do understand that being able to speak more then one language will make it easier for Ankama to understand you and your findings of the test.
Question: When you are subscribed to Dofus will you have a subscription to Wakfu as well?
Answer: We really don’t know. It has been proposed once in a brainstorm session, but we start to think about it when the game is finished.
Question: Will we see some returning nostalgic Dofus monsters?
Answer: Well you will see the Tofu back of course. It became one of our icons so we can’t leave our most popular monster out of Wakfu. But we don’t know yet about other monsters.
Question: Will you have like Dofus more then one character slots?
Answer: Yes but like Dofus you can’t have more then one of those characters in the game at once.
Question: And multiclienting?
Answer: Ankama studios never liked multiclienting, but we can’t ban it because its fully legal. Although for Wakfu it will be a lot harder to multiclient because some events happen differently then they did in Dofus.
Question: Will Wakfu have better music?
Answer: Yes, because Dofus only uses flash as engine its close to impossible to make ingame translated music files. Which are needed for compressed music files without losing quality. Like we told you in the article about Dofus, music only gets about 5 MB of space to fit their music in. Wakfu will partly/fully use Java as an engine which allows music encryption having it easier to use improved music quality without needing more memory space.
Question: Dofus has a lot of hidden humor (Astrub pub candles, wabbit island statues) will Wakfu have them as well?
Answer: Yes, but we have to be more cautious. We want to have a bigger public for Wakfu and the larger the public, the larger the parent complaints get.
I can finally say I’m done. I hope you all had fun reading my articles. Also let me use this last opportunity to apologize again for the lateness of this article, maybe I should stop subscribing to the MMORPG called real life *wink*
