5# Half-Life

Well, this is the game I referred to when I was talking about Halo and Baldur’s Gate. I remember it was hard dividing my time between the awesomeness that was Baldur’s Gate and this magnificent shooter. This shooter revolutionized the shooter genre, by adding a different way of story telling. Clever opponents were also a part of Half-Life and the multiplayer was a load of fun.

The story starts of with Gordon Freeman, working as a mere scientist at the Black Mesa organization. He works on an experiment, which unfortunately goes very wrong. Portals are opened and aliens make their way into our world. Gordon fights for not only his survival, but also of his fellow teammates. The army eventually comes in, assuming to help clear the aliens out.. but that too isn’t the case. Read more

10# World of Warcraft

I started my World of Warcraft journey on day one. My little brother and I got the game (the limited edition) and we were very eager to see if the World of Warcraft was all that we expected from it. After years of waiting (you know how long Blizzard takes with their games), we finally got the chance to play the game.

Seeing as we were both playing on one account (yeah I know, Blizzard doesn’t really like that.. but I wanted to see what the game was all about before getting it myself) it sometimes could get quite difficult to divide playing time. Seeing as WoW takes up a lot of time, a 2 hour play session isn’t really that long, so it didn’t take long before we didn’t play the game anymore. Not because we didn’t like it, not at all, we both loved the game.. but it just isn’t possible to both play on one account. Seeing as I didn’t have the money to both pay for subscription and the game itself, we didn’t play for about a half year.

Funny thing is, before the game was even launched, my brother and I both wrote down our characters background stories. Odd actually, seeing as we both never even role played (RP) before. I thought about this one day and when I suddenly stumbled on the WoW webpage and found out there was a new RP-PVP server announced. It was the server that kept me in it’s grasp for over four years. The name of the server: Defias Brotherhood. Read more

Interested to see what the next five games in my list are? Well, you can check them out right here. We start off at 15#!

15# Pokémon

These games absorb a lot, and I mean A LOT, of your time. I started my journey with Pokémon Blue, around the time that Pokémon was a huge hit in not only our country, but in the entire world.

I remember me and my little brother getting these games for Sinterklaas (Something like Christmas, you get presents and such). My father already bought these games early on, but he always lets us test the games to see if it works and if we like it. Heck, we liked it so much, we secretly started playing each time my parents weren’t home. By the time we really did get the presents, we already nearly finished the game! We even bought another Gameboy so we could play together.

After a year or so, Pokémon Stadium got released on the Nintendo 64. It was one of the coolest things I have ever seen in videogames. The ability to see your own trained Pokémon in full 3D, that was so awesome. Read more

Jean’s Top 20 Of All Time

I saw a video on the website of Cinemassacre recently, which showed the Top-20 of his favourite movies. Personally, I would find it really hard to make a list like that, but then I started to ponder: “What would my Top-20 of videogames look like?”. So I wrote down a list of games that made some sort of impact on me.

Remember, this is my list, so be gentle! The first one the list is…

20# Street Fighter

Oh, how much I have played the Street Fighter games, especially Street Fighter II on the SNES. I fired it up on my SNES a while back, and it’s just as much fun as it was years ago. The graphics, sound track, the action.. it all rocked! Street Fighter II was a real innovation back then.

As a kid, I really had a hard time with the last couple matches. The fights against the boxer Balrog, the drama queen Vega, the tall Sagat and the unbeatable M. Bison were really hard for me as a kid. Bison in particular was nearly impossible for me to take down. Fortunately, whenever I did take him down.. it gave me a proud feeling. I was so proud of myself on taking him down, it was awesome.

Limited Minds

We humans are very limited in most things. We aren’t the highest in the foodchain, well, actually we are because of our minds. The only reason why we became number one in the foodchain is because of our minds, our technology, and because of our weaponry. We can invent a lot of things, but we can’t really imagine other worlds. Our minds are limited to reality.

Game developers mostly look to the world we are living in. The entire universe, from moons, to sun’s, and even to the smallest stars, can all be implemented into a game, and it’s quite easy as well. It is easy using reality as a resource on making your game. But the galaxy and the small rocks called planets that hang in there in that big, black, ol’ universe aren’t the only things that are easily implemented into the game, but things like water, air, breathing, the sky, the sun, the sand, all these things are the main basics of making worlds in a game. But why would they do that? Is it easier for us to understand if it’s all so “normal” to us? We all know the sky, we all know water is for drinking, swimming and cleaning yourself, but what would happen if your in a world where water doesn’t even exist? What would happen if you didn’t need to breath, or if oxygen didn’t even exist at all? It would be a whole new concept for gaming. Developers always limit themselves to this basic concept, and the reason why they cling themselves to this basic concept is because, they can’t think of something else. Our minds can’t look further then reality, our brain can’t seem to think of another world that is so different to ours.

It would be nice to see a world where you need to breath water instead of air, and that air makes you drown, just like water does in our world. Things like that would make the gameplay a bit awkward, but it’s a nice diversion of the real thing, of our reality. What if we could just walk through the universe, breathing in that good ol’ black goodie that is provided by a thing called the galaxy. And what would it be like if sleeping makes you awake and the other way around? That one was a bit weird, but heck, I’m trying to think of something different. You may think that I am just blabbing about, but if you start thinking about this subject, and start thinking about a whole other world, where water wouldn’t exist and the universe might not even exist, a whole new concept, what comes into your mind? I’m having a very hard time thinking of something that is so diverse and so different from our knowledge of reality.

I think that it’s just not possible to imagine such things, our brains wouldn’t be able to imagine those bizzare things. That’s why game developers are having a hard time to create a real new feel, a whole new reality, something that players never touched, seen or heared before. Even game developer masterminds such as Shigeru Miyamato and the people from Blizzard and even Sega aren’t able to to figure out what another reality would be like. However, if game developers could figure out what another reality would look like, I bet that their games would get high grades for sound, graphics, and the most important of all, originality.

The only thing that the developers need to do is to break that barrier surrounding our mind and that strips us from good and inovative ideas, but that will be a very tricky task. We may succeed, but that chance will be very slim. All we can do know is to sit back in our comfortable chair, pick up the remote, turn the TV on, put it on the right channel, and start playing games that we do understand, games that do fit in our reality. Flying through the galaxy, blowing stuff up on the ground, and feeding dogs on our handheld, all this does exist in our reality and it might never change. Well, this was my column, I do hope you liked it, and I do hope you think of something that gamedevelopers might use for their games that will be released in the future.
